Prokofiev - The Stone Flower (Bolshoi Ballet), at www.Woolworths
First performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in 1954, this ballet draws on the rich heritage of Russian folklore to tell the tale of the young stonemason Danila, who must choose between his village sweetheart Katerina and a magical temptress. It is based on fairy tales from the Urals collected by Pavel Bazhov and set in the middle of the 19th century. In Stone Flower you can feel Prokofiev's resignation after the hard struggle with the political situation, but nevertheless, he hasn't lost his brilliance and the music of his last ballet still is full of catchy tunes and joyousness. However, with the completion of his composition, it took four years before it received its premiere in Moscow and was not a great success at all. It was only three years later with the choreography of Yuri Grigorovich that Prokofiev's Stone Flower finally come to a glorious resurrection. The young choreographer simplified the story and focussed on nothing but the dance. The ballet became his first major success. The presented version shows a reproduction of this choreography from 1957 which has become immortal.

The Taming Of The Shrew (1929), at Woolworths
William Shakespeare's classic farce about a wealthy merchant of Padua who announces he will not allow the marriage of his youngest daughter, Bianca, until her sister Katherine is wed even though the latter is shunned by all because of her shrewish behaviour. Petruchio (Douglas Fairbanks) steps in to tame the shrew but can he? This talkie is the only film co-starring Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. This print is from the 1966 re-release, the only film Miss Pickford allowed since her retirement. It is faithful to the original except that new music and new sound effects were added by Mr. Marty Kemp of the Mary Pickford Company during his painstaking restoration of the film. Seven minutes of the footage that were in the original were removed in bits and pieces to tighten the editing and the sound of the voices was improved by newre-recording techniques since only the original sound discs, scratched and deteriorated over the years remained as the source material. Serious difficulties with Douglas Fairbanks, combined with other troubles, caused Miss Pickford to recall the filming of the Shrew as a dreadful experience, although in retrospect she later said that she thought Fairbanks was magnificent in the final version of the film.
